Pharmacological Action:

Sarafloxacin is a broad-spectrum bactericidal fluoroquinolone antibiotic for veterinary use. It demonstrates strong antibacterial activity against most Gram-negative and Gram-positive bacilli and cocci, including:

  • Klebsiella spp.

  • Staphylococcus spp.

  • Escherichia coli

  • Enterobacter spp.

  • Campylobacter spp.

  • Shigella spp.

  • Proteus spp.

  • Pasteurella spp.

It is slightly less effective against Mycoplasma compared to difloxacin.

Sarafloxacin is rapidly absorbed after oral administration, reaching peak plasma concentrations in 1–3 hours. In chickens, oral bioavailability is approximately 61%. The drug distributes widely throughout the body and is primarily excreted via the kidneys, with high concentrations in the urine. The elimination half-life in chickens is about 3.3 hours.


Indications:

For the treatment of infectious diseases in poultry caused by sarafloxacin-sensitive bacteria.


Dosage and Administration:

  • Chickens: 0.25 – 0.5 g per 1 liter of drinking water

  • Duration: 3 – 5 consecutive days


Adverse Reactions:

  1. May cause cartilage degeneration in young animals, affecting bone development and leading to lameness and pain.

  2. Gastrointestinal symptoms such as vomiting, anorexia, and diarrhea may occur.

  3. Dermatologic reactions including erythema, itching, urticaria, and photosensitivity have been reported.


Precautions:

  • Not for use in laying hens during the egg production period.
