For Veterinary Use Only
Main Ingredient:
Colistin Sulfate
Specification:
10 g per 100 g (300 million IU)
Pharmacological Action:
Pharmacodynamics:
Colistin is a polypeptide antibiotic and a cationic surfactant. It interacts with phospholipids in the bacterial cell membrane, disrupts membrane integrity, increases permeability, and causes bacterial death.
It shows potent bactericidal activity against Gram-negative aerobes such as:
-
Escherichia coli
-
Haemophilus spp.
-
Klebsiella spp.
-
Pasteurella spp.
-
Pseudomonas aeruginosa
-
Salmonella spp.
-
Shigella spp.
Gram-positive bacteria are generally resistant. Colistin has complete cross-resistance with polymyxin B, but not with other antibiotic classes.
Pharmacokinetics:
-
Poorly absorbed through oral administration
-
Rapidly absorbed via non-oral routes and widely distributed in organs such as the heart, lungs, liver, kidneys, and skeletal muscles
-
Primarily excreted unchanged via the kidneys
Drug Interactions:
-
May cause muscle weakness or respiratory arrest when combined with neuromuscular blockers or aminoglycosides
-
Shows synergistic effects with EDTA and cationic disinfectants against Pseudomonas aeruginosa
Indications:
For the treatment of intestinal infections in pigs and chickens caused by Gram-negative bacteria.
